The back is the one area you cannot reach yourself. That is why it attracts a different kind of client than the other areas — most often a man who simply wants the problem gone.
The back is billed in two bands, because hair growth rarely covers the whole surface evenly:
The upper back with the shoulder girdle. The band where hair growth in men appears most often.
The lower part of the back, from the waistline up.
Both items together. The price list also has packages combining the back with the torso and nape, better value than areas bought separately.
The nape and neck are a separate item — often added to the shoulders.

It is not about aesthetics in the same sense as with legs. The back is an area you cannot shave yourself, cannot wax yourself, and mostly cannot see. The alternative is asking your partner or a long-handled razor — both end unevenly, with nicks between the shoulder blades thrown in.
Dense back hair makes small irritations slower to heal, and shaving here regularly ends in folliculitis — in some people it progresses to acne keloidalis nuchae, described mainly in the occipital and nape area (Sánchez-Dueñas et al., 2024, PMID 39122530).
The third thing we say openly: this is a treatment nobody can tell you had. No swelling, no bruising — you go back to work the same day.
Position and coverage. Lying face down. We work in bands from top to bottom, so nothing on the large surface is missed.
Sensation. Back skin is thick, so the sensation is moderate. It is more distinct around the shoulder blades and along the spine, where skin sits close to bone.
The area has to be shaved the day before, and you cannot do it yourself. If you have nobody to ask, mention it when booking — we shave the area on site before the session.
We agree where the shoulders end and where the lower back and nape begin. Noted in your treatment record.
Work in bands, with cooling. A large handpiece shortens the time on this surface.
Redness for up to a few hours. For 48 hours no sauna, no gym, and no backpack on a bare back.
At Velvet Skin Clinic we plan a series of 6–10 sessions in this area, every 6–8 weeks.
Back hair is androgen-dependent, so in men the series can be longer than in women over a comparable surface, and maintenance sessions are needed more often. The range is our clinic's protocol.
There is one reason a single session is never enough: the laser only affects follicles in their growth phase (anagen). At any given moment only part of the follicles in an area are in that phase — the rest are in catagen or telogen and do not respond to light. That is why sessions are repeated at intervals, to catch successive groups of follicles as they enter anagen (Natarelli et al., 2023, PMID 36769541).
We do not use one laser for everything. The device for this area is chosen at your consultation, after assessing your skin phototype and the thickness and colour of the hair. For phototypes IV–VI, the choice of wavelength is a matter of safety, not convenience (Lee et al., 2026, PMID 41884758).
First choice for the back: a large handpiece, high power and 1064 nm Nd:YAG, which handles thick, dark male hair and darker phototypes.
The HS handpiece on large surfaces, the ChillTip along edges and the spine.
When back skin is sensitive or prone to folliculitis.
Prices apply at both clinics. The longer the series, the lower the price per session. When treating several areas at once, package prices from the full price list apply.

Laser hair removal works over a series, not from one session to the next — below is what you can realistically see at each stage in this particular area. Results are individual and depend on hair colour and thickness, skin phototype, and hormonal factors.
Shedding after 7–21 days. Since you do not see your back daily, the first change you notice is the end of itching and hair catching on your shirt.
Density on the shoulders drops fastest, because the hair there is thickest. The problem of asking someone to shave your back before a trip ends.
The back stays smooth or with single hairs. Men need maintenance sessions more often than women, because torso hair is androgen-dependent.
Because in laser hair removal such a photo would prove nothing. You arrive at the session shaved — a condition without which the laser cannot work properly. A "before" photo would therefore show shaved skin, and an "after" photo hair-free skin. Both look the same; the difference only appears two to three weeks later, when one of them does not grow back.
It is more honest to describe what changes and when — and to show reviews from people who completed a full series. Before-and-after photos make sense for treatments with immediately visible results, and we publish them in those categories.
"It was my first laser hair removal and I was really stressed, but the girl looking after me truly made sure I felt comfortable. Everything explained carefully, no rushing. Great results, even better service."

Below are situations specific to this area. Contraindications common to all laser treatments — photosensitising medication, photosensitive epilepsy, cancer under active treatment, recent procedures in the area — are discussed during your consultation. Complications after laser treatments and how to manage them are described in a 2026 review (Nguyen et al., PMID 41797616).
If you have nobody to ask, we shave the area on site before the session — just mention it when booking. It is the most common question for this area and the easiest to solve.
At our clinic we plan 6–10 sessions at 6–8 week intervals. Back hair is androgen-dependent, so in men the series can be longer and maintenance sessions are needed more often.
In most men, hair growth starts at the shoulder girdle and works its way down. If the lower back is clear, the shoulders are enough. With hair across the whole surface, the back-torso-nape package is better value.
No. The redness settles within a few hours and stays under your shirt. There is no swelling or bruising — you go back to work the same day.
Fewer hairs mean fewer follicles that can become inflamed — the most common reason men choose this area. It is not, however, a treatment for acne lesions; with active inflammation we reschedule.
Yes, the back has to be uncovered. The room is closed, with only the practitioner inside.
Male hair is thicker, so it absorbs more energy and the sensation can be more distinct than in women over the same surface. Back skin is thick, though, which works in favour of comfort.
