Body scars

A scar from surgery, a caesarean section, an injury or a burn can stay for years — but it can be clearly flattened and softened so that it draws far less attention. At your consultation we will assess when it formed and how it looks (raised, tethered, discoloured) — and choose the laser and the course.

02 — What it is

Body scars — and how to improve them

Body scars are permanent marks left where the skin has been broken: after surgery (including caesarean sections and orthopaedic procedures), after injuries, wounds and burns. Where healing takes place the skin rebuilds differently from healthy tissue — hence the differences in colour, texture and elasticity. Some scars are depressed, some raised, and some tether the skin or leave it pale.

Honestly: scars can be clearly flattened, softened and evened out, but they cannot be made to vanish without trace. We work on remodelling the tissue with a fractional laser, microneedling radiofrequency and mechanical stimulation. We match the method to the type and age of the scar — and the sooner we start work on a maturing scar, the better the result.

See the details

Why the type of scar determines the method

Atrophic (depressed) scars need rebuilding and filling with collagen, hypertrophic (raised) scars — smoothing and remodelling, and tethered scars — release and better elasticity. That is why we turn to different technologies: a fractional laser, microneedling RF or Icoone. We take particular care with keloid scars, which have a tendency to recur — we assess this at your consultation.

04 — Where they come from

The most common body scars

Post-surgical and caesarean

After a surgical or caesarean incision the skin heals along a scar line — one that can be clearly improved over time.

Traumatic

After cuts, wounds and accidents scars can be irregular, sometimes tethered or discoloured.

From burns

Burn scars can be extensive and restrict movement — they need softening and better elasticity.

05 — Recognition

Identify the type of your scar

Atrophic (depressed)

Drawn in below the level of the skin — it needs collagen rebuilding and filling from within.

Hypertrophic (raised)

Raised above the skin within the wound area — it responds well to smoothing and laser remodelling.

Tethered / discoloured

It pulls the skin or stands out in colour — we work on elasticity and evening out the tone.

Keloid scars that extend beyond the wound require particular care — we assess the type and age of the scar at your consultation before choosing a method.

07 — How we can help you

Recommended solutions for body scars

We have several technologies with different mechanisms. We match them to the type and age of the scar and the area. Each method has its own dedicated page.

Laser — scar removal

Laser scar removal

The Fotona laser flattens and evens out scars — it works well on post-surgical, caesarean and traumatic scars.

Fractional laser

Fotona fractional laser resurfacing

A fractional Er:YAG remodels the skin layer by layer — improving the texture and the depth of the scar.

Microneedling RF

Vivace microneedling RF

RF energy delivered by needles deep into the scar stimulates collagen remodelling — including in tethered scars.

Mechanical stimulation

Icoone Med

Micro-stimuli and vacuum soften the scar and improve microcirculation and elasticity — support for tethered scars.

What the research says about treating scars

The methods we use are supported in the literature. Below are publications on laser remodelling of scars.

Informational and educational material — it does not replace a consultation. Scars are permanent changes; results are individual and depend on the type and age of the scar.

10 — How it works in practice

Scar therapy step by step

Once we have assessed the type and age of the scar, we plan a course — sometimes combining several technologies. After treatment the skin may be pink; the result builds gradually, and early, maturing scars respond best.

Your consultation and assessment

Identifying the type of scar, its age and the area.

The course plan

Choosing the technologies, the number of treatments and the intervals.

The treatments

Remodelling the tissue — laser, microneedling RF, mechanical stimulation.

Results and maintenance

Flattening and softening; top-up sessions if needed.

11 — Support and prevention

How to support the result and protect the scar

A scar after treatment needs protection — it improves the result and lowers the risk of pigmentation.

Sun protection

Fresh scars and skin after treatment need SPF 50 — the sun locks in pigmentation.

Moisturising and oiling

Regular care supports the elasticity and maturation of the scar.

No irritation

After treatment skip the sauna, the swimming pool and intensive training for as long as your specialist advises.

Acting early

A maturing scar (a few weeks to months old) is easier to work on than one that is years old.

Sticking to the course

Results on scars build over a course — keeping to the intervals decides the outcome.

14 — Safety

When to take extra care

Scar treatments are always preceded by a medical history. The main contraindications and situations calling for caution:

a fresh, unhealed wound
a tendency to keloid scarring
a tan and sunbed use immediately before/after
active skin inflammation and infections
pregnancy and breastfeeding
clotting disorders

Scars are permanent changes — we work honestly on flattening and softening them, without promising complete removal.

15 — Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about body scars

Will the scar disappear completely?

Honestly: no. A scar is a permanent change in the skin, so it cannot be made to vanish without trace. It can, however, be clearly flattened, softened and evened out in colour, so that it draws far less attention — especially when therapy is started early.

Can a caesarean or surgical scar be improved?

Yes. Post-surgical and caesarean scars respond well to laser and microneedling RF — we flatten, soften and even them out. It is best to start once the scar has healed but is still maturing.

When is the best time to start — with a fresh or an old scar?

A maturing scar (from a few weeks to a year or so after healing) is easier to work on and gives a better result than one that is years old. We improve older scars too, the plan is simply longer.

How many treatments are needed?

We usually plan a course of several treatments spaced apart, depending on the type and age of the scar. We agree the exact plan after assessing the scar at your consultation.

What does a scar treatment feel like?

Comfort depends on the method. After a laser or microneedling RF the skin may be pink for a few days; we use anaesthetic where it is needed and give you aftercare instructions.

How much do scar treatments cost?

The price depends on the technology, the size and type of the scar and the length of the course. We provide a quote at your consultation, and full rates are available in the price list.
