02 — What it is

What are expression lines

Expression lines (also called dynamic lines) are the lines that appear when the face moves — when you smile, furrow your forehead or squint. The muscles of facial expression attach directly to the skin, so every movement folds it in the same places. Over time, as the skin loses collagen, those folds start to show at rest as well.

They most often affect three areas of the upper face: the vertical frown line between the brows, the horizontal lines across the forehead and the crow’s feet at the outer corner of the eye. They are a natural part of ageing rather than a flaw — but if they add years or a stern look, they can be gently softened.

The first-choice solution is botulinum toxin type A — a protein that temporarily and reversibly weakens the overactive contraction of a specific muscle for several months. The skin above it stops folding and gradually smooths out. The effect develops over a few days, reaches its full extent at around two weeks and usually lasts 3–4 months.

Where expression lines come from

Repeated facial movement

The same movements — raising the brows, furrowing the forehead, smiling — fold the skin along the same lines for years.

Falling collagen and elastin

With age the skin springs back more slowly, so the mark left by a movement lingers longer and becomes more permanent.

Lifestyle and the sun

UV radiation, stress, sleeping on your side and squinting in the sun all speed up the point at which lines become permanent.

Frequently asked questions about expression lines

Will it be obvious that I have had something done?

With a correctly chosen dose, no. The aim is to soften the line while keeping your natural expression. That is why the dose and the injection points are chosen by a doctor after assessing how your muscles work.

How long does the effect last?

Usually 3–4 months. The effect develops over a few days and reaches its full extent around two weeks after the treatment. With regular repetition the intervals often become longer.

How safe is it?

Botulinum toxin type A is one of the best-studied aesthetic procedures and has been in use for decades. At our clinic it is administered by doctors, after assessment and taking into account the contraindications discussed at your consultation.

How does it differ from fillers and biostimulators?

The toxin relaxes the muscle that creates the line on movement. Fillers and biostimulators rebuild the skin you see at rest. For static wrinkles we work on the quality of the skin — see the concern “static wrinkles and volume loss”.

What does the treatment feel like?

It is a few very fine injections — most people describe them as light pinpricks. An anaesthetic is usually not needed and the treatment takes little more than ten minutes.
