Laser Hair Removal · Warsaw

Upper lip laser hair removal
a five-minute session

The upper lip is the smallest area on our price list and the shortest session — about five minutes. It is also the area where the question of a hormonal cause comes up most often.

Treatment Area

What exactly this area covers

The area is narrow with sharp boundaries, so it is easy to confuse with neighbouring items on the price list:

01

The upper lip

The strip of skin between the nose and the lip line, on both sides.

02

The chin is not included

The chin is a separate item. If hair appears in both places, it is worth pricing the "full face" option.

03

Cheeks and sideburns not included

Also a separate item on the price list, at the same price as the upper lip.

Why This Area

Why laser instead of wax above the lip

The skin above the upper lip is thin and richly supplied with blood vessels, with the orbicularis muscle beneath it. Wax removes a layer of epidermis together with the hair — hence the typical redness lasting several hours and skin tears with a careless pull.

Laser hair removal leaves the epidermis intact — the energy is absorbed by melanin in the follicle. This matters especially if you use retinoids or acids, after which the epidermis is thinner.

A third thing: waxing above the lip needs repeating every 2–3 weeks, and between appointments the hair has to grow long enough to grip. With the laser you simply shave the area and nobody has to wait.

The Session

What to expect during treatment

Time
approx. 5 min
Series
6–10 sessions
Interval
every 4 weeks — intervals on the face are shorter than on the body
Position
Sitting or reclining, with eye protection

Position and protection. Sitting or reclining, with eye shields. We always protect the eyes when working on the face.

Sensation. Short, sharp pinpricks — the area is tiny, so the whole session is a few dozen pulses. The skin above the lip is sensitive, but the session ends before the sensation can build up.

Shaving

Shave or trim the hair the day before the session. No plucking or waxing for 4 weeks before the series.

No make-up

Come in with cleansed skin. Foundation and powder reflect light and interfere with the treatment.

Treatment

Work with a small handpiece, a few passes. Eye protection the whole time.

Afterwards

Redness usually settles within a few hours. For 48 hours no retinoids or acids; for 2 weeks use SPF 50.

Number of Sessions

How many sessions and how far apart

At Velvet Skin Clinic we plan a series of 6–10 sessions in this area, every 4 weeks — intervals on the face are shorter than on the body.

The upper lip usually needs a longer series than body areas and more frequent maintenance sessions, because facial hair is strongly hormone-dependent. The range is our clinic's protocol.

There is one reason a single session is never enough: the laser only affects follicles in their growth phase (anagen). At any given moment only part of the follicles in an area are in that phase — the rest are in catagen or telogen and do not respond to light. That is why sessions are repeated at intervals, to catch successive groups of follicles as they enter anagen (Natarelli et al., 2023, PMID 36769541).

Choosing the Device

Which laser for the upper lip

We do not use one laser for everything. The device for this area is chosen at your consultation, after assessing your skin phototype and the thickness and colour of the hair. For phototypes IV–VI, the choice of wavelength is a matter of safety, not convenience (Lee et al., 2026, PMID 41884758).

LightSheer Duet™

A small handpiece with contact cooling — first choice in a narrow area where precision and epidermis protection count.

Thunder Quanta™

When the hair is thick and dark, or the phototype darker.

Soprano Ice Platinum

For sensitive, redness-prone skin.

Prices

Results

What changes with each session

Laser hair removal works over a series, not from one session to the next — below is what you can realistically see at each stage in this particular area. Results are individual and depend on hair colour and thickness, skin phototype, and hormonal factors.

Stage 1

After 1–2 sessions

Hair sheds after 7–21 days. Above the lip the change shows quickly, because the surface is small and every removed hair counts.

Stage 2

After 3–4 sessions

Regrowing hairs are visibly finer and lighter. The rough shadow above the lip that appeared the day after shaving or waxing disappears.

Stage 3

After the full series

What remains are a few fine hairs or fine vellus hair, which the laser does not act on. This is the most hormone-dependent area on the whole price list — maintenance sessions are the rule here, not the exception.

Why you will find no before & after photos here

Because in laser hair removal such a photo would prove nothing. You arrive at the session shaved — a condition without which the laser cannot work properly. A "before" photo would therefore show shaved skin, and an "after" photo hair-free skin. Both look the same; the difference only appears two to three weeks later, when one of them does not grow back.

It is more honest to describe what changes and when — and to show reviews from people who completed a full series. Before-and-after photos make sense for treatments with immediately visible results, and we publish them in those categories.

Safety

What we discuss before the series

Below are situations specific to this area. Contraindications common to all laser treatments — photosensitising medication, photosensitive epilepsy, cancer under active treatment, recent procedures in the area — are discussed during your consultation. Complications after laser treatments and how to manage them are described in a 2026 review (Nguyen et al., PMID 41797616).

Male-pattern hair growth in women (hirsutism) can have a hormonal cause, most often polycystic ovary syndrome. Laser hair removal removes the symptom, not the cause — so with a sudden increase in hair growth we suggest endocrine diagnostics alongside the series.
Topical and oral retinoids, acids — paused before the series as advised by your doctor.
Pigmented moles above the lip are avoided and covered (Cices et al., 2023, PMID 37493510).
A recent facial tan — a minimum 4-week break, then SPF 50 for the whole series.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions — upper lip

Does upper lip hair grow back thicker after laser?

No. That belief comes from shaving: a cut hair has a blunt tip and feels thicker, although it is identical. The laser acts on the follicle, so regrowing hair is finer and lighter, not thicker.

How many sessions does the upper lip need?

At our clinic we plan 6–10 sessions every 4 weeks. Facial hair is strongly hormone-dependent, so maintenance sessions are needed more often than on the body.

Will the treatment leave a mark visible at work?

Redness above the lip usually lasts a few hours. If discretion matters, book the session at the end of the day. You can apply make-up the next day.

Will the laser remove light fuzz?

No. The laser needs melanin in the hair shaft to work. Blonde, grey and red hair contains too little of it — laser hair removal does not work on fine vellus hair and we do not promise it will. During your consultation we assess whether your hair is suitable for laser treatment.

Can upper lip hair come back after completing your course?

It can reappear with hormonal changes — pregnancy, menopause, stopping contraception, thyroid conditions. A single maintenance session is then enough, not a whole series.

Is this related to PCOS?

Increased facial hair can be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome. If the hair appeared suddenly or is accompanied by cycle irregularities, it is worth discussing possible hormonal causes with your doctor. Laser hair removal removes the symptom but does not treat the cause.

Can I treat my upper lip if I use retinol?

Retinoids are paused before the session — the exact timing depends on the product and your doctor's advice. Mention them during your consultation, because skin on retinoids is thinner and reacts differently.
