Botulinum toxin type A is a medical preparation that reduces excessive muscle contraction. Once used to treat conditions involving excessive, abnormal muscle spasms, today it is most often used in aesthetic medicine treatments — smoothing expression lines, lifting drooping corners of the mouth or treating excessive sweating of the underarms, hands and feet.

How botulinum toxin works

Injected into the muscles responsible for forming wrinkles in a given area, the toxin blocks the impulses between nerves and muscles: the muscles weaken, the skin releases its tension and the wrinkles smooth out. A properly performed treatment achieves the effect of a younger-looking, rested and relaxed face.

The preparation blocks the transmission of impulses between the nerve and the facial muscle in the treated area.

Bruxism and the jaw

What to expect from a botulinum toxin treatment

A botulinum toxin treatment is quick — it takes 15 to 30 minutes — and involves only minor discomfort, so no prior anaesthesia is required. Immediately after the treatment, some skin redness and slight swelling may appear at the injection sites, lasting around 1 hour. The treatment requires no recovery period — you can return to work and everyday activities straight away.

Aftercare guidelines — botulinum toxin

The treatment requires no downtime, yet during the first 24 hours it is worth following a few rules so the preparation settles properly.

Stay upright

For about 4 hours, avoid bending your head forward or lying down — this helps keep the preparation at the injection site.

Use your expressions

In the first hours, gently exercise the expressions of the treated areas, as advised by your doctor.

No pressure or massage

Avoid massaging or pressing the treated spots; skip make-up around the injection points that day.

Skip sauna and exercise

For 1–2 days, avoid the sauna, tanning beds, swimming pools and intense physical exercise.

Give the effect time

The full effect is visible after about 2 weeks — wait until then to judge the result.

Does a botulinum toxin treatment hurt?

The treatment involves only minor discomfort and usually requires no anaesthesia. All you feel are tiny pricks of a fine needle. After the injections, mild redness and slight swelling may appear, subsiding within about an hour. You return to everyday activities straight away.

When are the results visible and how long do they last?

The first effects appear after 3–7 days, and the full result after about two weeks. The smoothing of wrinkles usually lasts from 4 to 6 months. After that time the muscle gradually regains its activity and the treatment can be safely repeated.

Does the face lose its expressions after Botox?
