02 — About the Treatment

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid — how it works

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is a minimally invasive aesthetic medicine treatment in which a doctor injects precise amounts of cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel into the lips — the same well-studied substance the body produces naturally. The filler adds volume to the lips, defines the contour and Cupid’s bow, corrects the proportions and hydrates the body of the lips. The result is visible immediately after the treatment.

The goal is balance and a natural look, never “more at any cost” — so we work conservatively, dosing the filler so that your lips suit your facial features. The effect is temporary and reversible with hyaluronidase: hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed, and if needed it can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase).

Volume, contour and hydration — or all three at once

With age, the lips lose volume and definition: the body of the lips becomes thinner, the Cupid’s bow fades, fine lines appear above the upper lip (“barcode lines”), and the corners of the mouth may start to droop. Some people simply have naturally small or thin lips. An HA filler lets us match the result to the need — subtly add volume, even out asymmetry, define the contour, or focus on hydrating the lips and improving their quality. 10 — The Procedure

What the treatment looks like step by step

The treatment is preceded by a consultation, during which the doctor takes your medical history, discusses your expectations and rules out contraindications. The treatment itself usually takes 30–45 minutes and is well tolerated — performed under topical anaesthesia (a numbing cream, and the fillers often contain lidocaine). Immediately after the treatment the lips may be swollen and minor bruising can appear, resolving within a few days.

How to care for your lips after the treatment

You can return to your day straight away — in the first days, though, it is worth following a few rules so that the filler settles evenly and the result lasts longer.

Cold sore prophylaxis

If you are prone to cold sores, we introduce antiviral prophylaxis before the treatment — this matters for safety.

Cooling and hygiene

In the first hours, gentle cooling reduces swelling; keep the area clean and avoid touching your lips.

Skip heat and exercise

For a few days, give the sauna, swimming pool, hot baths and intense physical exercise a rest.

Moisture and SPF

Moisturise your lips and protect them from UV — this maintains the quality of the lips and the result of the treatment.

Transient reactions

Swelling, minor bruising or tenderness are transient and usually resolve within a few days.

Contraindications and precautions

The treatment is performed by a doctor after a medical history and an individual assessment. The main contraindications and situations requiring caution:

a tendency to cold sores (antiviral prophylaxis)
pregnancy and breastfeeding
an active infection or inflammation around the mouth
blood clotting disorders
hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or the ingredients of the product
a fresh tan, autoimmune diseases
Possible reactions after the treatment

Transient reactions may occur after the treatment: swelling, redness, bruising or tenderness, which usually resolve within a few days. Asymmetry or palpable lumps are reported less often — they are usually correctable (among other ways, by topping up or dissolving the filler with hyaluronidase). Serious vascular complications are very rare when the treatment is performed by a doctor who knows the anatomy and follows safety protocols — which is why you should entrust this treatment only to a doctor.

Will my lips look natural?

Yes — that is our goal. We work conservatively, dosing the filler so that your lips suit your facial features. We can add volume, define the contour or focus on hydrating the lips. Avoiding the “duck lips” look comes down to technique and amount — which is why the treatment belongs in a doctor’s hands.

Does the treatment hurt?

We increase comfort with topical anaesthesia, and the fillers usually contain lidocaine. You may feel small pricks and a sensation of pressure. After the treatment the lips are temporarily swollen and minor bruising may appear, resolving quickly.

How long do the results last?

As a guide, from 6 to 12 months. Hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed, and longevity depends on the product, the amount, your metabolism and lifestyle. After that time the treatment can be repeated to maintain the result.

Can the result be reversed?

Yes — that is one of the advantages of hyaluronic acid. If needed, the filler can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase), and regardless of that, HA is absorbed on its own. This gives you full control over the result.

How is this different from LipLase?

An HA filler adds volume to the lips by injection — the augmentation effect is visible right away. LipLase is a laser that firms and gently lifts the lips with no needles and no added volume — for those who prefer not to have filler. We will help you choose at the consultation.

How much filler is needed?

Most often 1 ml for a subtle, natural result — the exact amount is chosen individually by the doctor after assessing your lips and your expectations. Sometimes we build the result in stages, over successive visits.
