Why the LightSheer Duet is the gold standard

The LightSheer Duet diode laser is one of the most advanced and best-documented laser systems for hair removal, with decades of clinical use behind the technology. It is the laser we have worked with the longest — since 2011 — and the one most of our 15 400 sessions were performed with.

How it works: LightSheer Duet is an 805 nm diode laser. It destroys the stem cells of the hair follicle with heat delivered by the laser beam. Thanks to selective photothermolysis, the energy accumulates only in the hair's pigment (melanin), not in the skin — minimising the risk of burns. The laser was designed for removing unwanted hair, treating the effects of hormonal disorders (hirsutism), and managing skin inflammation caused by abnormal follicular keratinisation.

Two handpieces: the large, vacuum-assisted HS handpiece covers big areas (legs, back) quickly and comfortably, while the small ChillTip handpiece with −5°C contact cooling works precisely on the face, bikini line and other delicate zones.

The laser's energy destroys the stem cells of the hair follicle — after a series of sessions the hair stops growing back. No more shaving, irritation or ingrown hairs.

How many sessions with the LightSheer

Photothermolysis only works on hairs in their growth phase (anagen). To reduce hair by around 95–99%, a minimum of 5 sessions is needed; for most people 5–8 sessions at intervals of 6–8 weeks are enough. The number is individual — hormones, among other factors, play a role.

Safety

Contraindications

Every case is assessed individually during the consultation. The main contraindications:

Absolute

Pregnancy and breastfeeding · hair too light in colour (blonde, grey, red) — the treatment will not be effective · cancer · photosensitising hormone therapy · dermatological and immunological conditions: photodermatoses, psoriasis, active skin infections, a tendency to scarring.

Relative (temporary)

Skin straight after tanning or with self-tanner · oral retinoid therapy — wait 6 months after finishing · photosensitising herbs · topical vitamin A and C, exfoliating and acid products · hair plucking within the last month before the session.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — LightSheer Duet

What does FDA clearance mean for the LightSheer?

It means the device has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration for permanent hair reduction — a regulated, defined claim. The LightSheer is also one of the few hair removal lasers with published device-specific clinical studies.

Does the LightSheer hurt?

The treatment is comfortable for most people. The vacuum-assisted HS handpiece and the cooled ChillTip (−5°C), plus cold packs, keep the sensation to warmth and light pinpricks.

How many sessions are needed?

For a 95–99% reduction, a minimum of 5 sessions; most people need 5–8, every 6–8 weeks, because the laser only acts on hairs in their growth phase.

Is the LightSheer right for darker skin?

The 800 nm diode has published results for phototypes V–VI (Adrian & Shay, 2000), but for darker or tanned skin we usually reach for the Thunder MT, whose 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength has the best safety margin. We decide at the consultation, after a patch test.

LightSheer or Thunder MT — which one for me?

LightSheer is the proven first choice for dark hair on lighter skin, with the strongest device-specific evidence. Thunder MT adds the alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths for darker skin, tanned skin and finer hair. The choice is made at your consultation — and within the Smooth Skin programme you have access to both.

How is the LightSheer different from IPL?

IPL is broad-spectrum pulsed light, less concentrated than a laser. The LightSheer emits one precise wavelength (805 nm) — hence higher effectiveness, repeatability and better control. It is a medical device, not a home gadget.
